Banded Leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus)
The Banded Leporinus is a striking and energetic freshwater fish, instantly recognisable by its bold black vertical bands set against a vibrant golden-yellow body. Its sleek, torpedo-shaped appearance and constant activity make it a true centrepiece in large aquariums. As it matures, the colours become even more vivid, creating an impressive display that stands out in any freshwater setup.
Known for its inquisitive nature and powerful swimming ability, the Banded Leporinus is constantly exploring its surroundings. While juveniles are often peaceful, adults can become territorial and boisterous, making careful tank mate selection essential. Due to their eventual size and active lifestyle, they are best suited to experienced fishkeepers with spacious aquariums.

๐ Care Requirements
๐งฌ Scientific Name: Leporinus fasciatus
๐ Common Name: Banded Leporinus
๐ Tank Size: 450L+ recommended
๐ Adult Size: Up to 30cm
๐ก๏ธ Temperature: 24โ28ยฐC
โ๏ธ pH Range: 6.0โ7.5
๐ง Temperament: Semi-aggressive
๐ฝ๏ธ Diet: High-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, fresh vegetables (courgette, spinach, peas), spirulina foods, fruits, and occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, krill, and earthworms
๐ฅ Group Size: Best kept singly or in carefully managed groups within very large aquariums
Banded Leporinus require a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room, strong filtration, and excellent water quality. Decor should include large pieces of driftwood, smooth rocks, and robust plants, although softer plants may be nibbled. A secure lid is recommended, as these powerful fish are capable jumpers.
๐ Compatibility
Banded Leporinus are best kept with other medium to large, robust fish that can tolerate their active and sometimes territorial nature, including:
๐ Silver Dollars
๐ Severums
๐ Large Geophagus species
๐ Festivum Cichlids
๐ Larger Plecos
๐ Bala Sharks
๐ Giant Danios
๐ Larger Rainbowfish
Avoid housing them with slow-moving fish, species with long flowing fins, very small community fish, or delicate invertebrates, as they may nip fins or view tiny tank mates as food.
Important Notes
Banded Leporinus grow much larger than many aquarists expect and should only be purchased if you can provide a suitably large aquarium throughout their lifetime. Juveniles sold at just a few centimetres long can eventually reach around 30cm.
These fish are omnivores with a strong preference for plant material. Without enough vegetable matter in their diet, they may begin nibbling aquarium plants. Offering regular servings of greens and spirulina-based foods helps satisfy their dietary needs.
Although they can sometimes be kept in groups when young, adults may become increasingly territorial, particularly in smaller aquariums. Plenty of swimming space and carefully selected tank mates are essential for long-term success.
The Banded Leporinus is a superb choice for experienced UK aquarists looking for a bold, energetic, and unusual feature fish. With its striking black-and-gold patterning, active personality, and commanding presence, it makes an unforgettable addition to large South American or mixed-species aquariums.
