📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare
📛 Common Name: Black Angelfish
🏠 Tank Size: 120L+ recommended
📏 Adult Size: Up to 15cm body length with a height of 20cm+ including fins
🌡️ Temperature: 24–30°C
⚗️ pH Range: 6.0–7.5
🧘 Temperament: Generally peaceful
🍽️ Diet: High-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, live foods, and occasional vegetable matter
👥 Group Size: Single, bonded pair, or groups of 5+ in suitably sized aquariums
Black Angelfish thrive in warm, mature aquariums with stable water conditions, plenty of vertical swimming space, and décor such as tall plants and driftwood that mimic their natural habitat.
🐠 Compatibility
Ideal for peaceful community aquariums with similarly sized tank mates. They mix well with larger tetras, rainbowfish, Corydoras, peaceful gouramis, dwarf cichlids, and bristlenose plecos. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs and very small fish that may be viewed as prey once the angelfish mature.
Important Notes
Black Angelfish may become territorial as they mature, particularly during breeding. Providing ample swimming space, tall plants, and visual barriers helps reduce aggression. Due to their tall body shape, they are best suited to aquariums with good height rather than shallow tanks. A varied, high-quality diet and regular water changes will help maintain their health and rich black colouration.
The Black Angelfish is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a graceful, intelligent, and beautifully coloured centrepiece fish that combines timeless elegance with bold visual impact, making it a spectacular addition to any freshwater community aquarium.
