Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.)

Add a hardworking and fascinating bottom-dweller to your aquarium with the ever-popular Bristlenose Pleco. Renowned for its impressive algae-grazing abilities and peaceful temperament, this hardy catfish is a favourite among aquarists of all experience levels. Mature males develop distinctive fleshy bristles across their nose, giving the species its common name and adding plenty of character.

Unlike many other pleco species, the Bristlenose Pleco remains a manageable size, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums where a larger common pleco would quickly outgrow the tank.

🌿 Why Choose Bristlenose Pleco?
🍃 Excellent algae and biofilm grazer
🐟 Unique facial bristles on mature males
🌱 Ideal for planted and community aquariums
🪵 Enjoys grazing on driftwood and natural décor
⭐ Hardy, peaceful, and beginner-friendly

Bristlenose Plecos spend much of their time grazing on algae, biofilm, driftwood, rocks, and aquarium glass, making them an active and rewarding species to observe throughout the day and evening.

📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Ancistrus sp.
📛 Common Name: Bristlenose Pleco
🏠 Tank Size: 90L+ recommended
📏 Adult Size: Up to 12–15cm
🌡️ Temperature: 22–28°C
⚗️ pH Range: 6.5–7.8
🧘 Temperament: Peaceful
🍽️ Diet: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, fresh vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), driftwood biofilm, frozen foods, and occasional live foods
👥 Group Size: Single, pair, or small group in larger aquariums

Bristlenose Plecos thrive in mature aquariums with excellent water quality, plenty of hiding places, driftwood, and smooth rocks. Driftwood is particularly beneficial, as it provides both grazing surfaces and fibre that aids digestion.

🐠 Compatibility

Perfect for peaceful community aquariums. They are compatible with tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, angelfish, gouramis, rainbowfish, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, and most other peaceful freshwater species. They can also be kept with freshwater shrimp, although very small shrimplets may occasionally be disturbed while the pleco is foraging.

Important Notes

Although Bristlenose Plecos are excellent algae eaters, they should not be relied upon solely for aquarium cleaning and require a balanced diet with plenty of vegetable matter. Males can become territorial towards other mature males in smaller aquariums, so providing multiple caves and hiding places helps minimise disputes. They are also one of the easier pleco species to breed in captivity, with males guarding eggs inside caves until they hatch.

The Bristlenose Pleco is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a hardy, peaceful, and practical catfish that combines outstanding algae-grazing ability with a unique appearance, making it a valuable addition to almost any freshwater community aquarium.
