🐟 Common Pleco (Common Pleco)
Add a powerful and highly effective algae-eating “clean-up crew” member to your aquarium with the Common Pleco. Known for its robust build and impressive size, this classic sucker catfish is one of the most widely recognised aquarium fish in the world.
Hardy, hardworking, and long-lived, the Common Pleco is best suited to large aquariums where it can grow comfortably and help manage algae while adding a prehistoric, armour-plated presence to the tank.
🌿 Why Choose Common Pleco?
🧼 Strong algae-eating capabilities (especially when young)
🐟 Hardy and adaptable bottom-dweller
🛡️ Armoured body with impressive prehistoric look
🌿 Useful clean-up crew addition in large tanks
⭐ Long-lived and highly resilient species
Common Plecos spend much of their time attached to glass, wood, and décor, grazing surfaces and adding constant low-level activity to the aquarium.
📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Hypostomus plecostomus
📛 Common Name: Common Pleco
🏠 Tank Size: 300L+ strongly recommended (large adult size)
📏 Adult Size: 30–50 cm+
🌡️ Temperature: 22–28°C
⚗️ pH Range: 6.0–7.5
🧘 Temperament: Peaceful (may become territorial with age)
🍽️ Diet: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, vegetables, driftwood biofilm
👥 Group Size: Solitary (territorial as adults)
Common Plecos require large, well-filtered aquariums with driftwood, caves, and plenty of space to accommodate their eventual size.
🐠 Compatibility
Suitable for large community aquariums with similarly sized or robust fish such as larger cichlids, silver dollars, and other big peaceful species. Avoid small or delicate fish in long-term setups.
⚠️ Important Notes
Despite being sold as algae eaters, Common Plecos grow very large and require significant space, making them unsuitable for small or medium tanks. They also require supplemental feeding and should not be relied on for algae control alone. Driftwood is essential in their diet and digestion.
The Common Pleco is best suited for experienced UK aquarists with large aquariums looking for a hardy, long-term bottom-dweller with a strong visual presence.
