Congo Puffer (Tetraodon miurus)

The Congo Puffer is a fascinating freshwater pufferfish from Central Africa, well known for its unusual appearance, ambush-hunting behaviour and ability to bury itself completely in the substrate. It is a highly characterful fish, but is best suited to an experienced aquarist and a species-only aquarium.

📏 Size & Appearance

Congo Puffers can reach approximately 15–17 cm, although individual specimens may remain somewhat smaller.

They have a compact, rounded body, large eyes and a broad head. Their colouration is highly variable and can change depending on their surroundings, mood and substrate. They commonly display brown, tan, orange and cream tones with irregular darker markings.

Their ability to bury themselves is one of their most distinctive characteristics.

🌡️ Care Requirements

• Aquarium: Ideally 120 litres or larger for a single adult.
• Temperature: Around 24–28°C
• pH: Approximately 6.5–7.5
• Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
• Filtration: Good biological filtration with moderate water movement.
• Substrate: A deep, soft sand substrate is highly recommended so the puffer can bury itself without injuring its skin.
• Decor: Driftwood, rocks and plants can be used to create cover and break up the aquarium.

A secure lid is recommended, as puffers can be surprisingly capable jumpers.

🍽️ Diet

Congo Puffers are carnivorous predators and should be offered a varied diet consisting primarily of meaty foods.

Suitable foods include:

• 🦐 Prawns
• 🐌 Snails
• 🦀 Small crustaceans
• 🪱 Bloodworm
• 🦐 Mysis shrimp
• 🐟 Occasional pieces of fish or other meaty foods

Snails and other hard-shelled foods are particularly useful because regularly crunching shells helps keep the puffer's continuously growing teeth worn down.

⚠️ Temperament & Tank Mates

Congo Puffers are generally best kept alone.

They are predatory and can be extremely aggressive towards other fish, particularly anything that comes within striking distance. Even apparently peaceful tank mates may eventually be attacked.

For this reason, we recommend a species-only aquarium with one Congo Puffer.

🌿 Aquarium Setup

A natural-looking setup with a deep sand bed, driftwood, rocks and sturdy aquatic plants works particularly well.

The puffer should have plenty of areas where it can disappear from view and bury itself. Don't be concerned if your Congo Puffer spends considerable amounts of time completely hidden beneath the sand — this is normal natural behaviour for the species.

⭐ Important Notes

Congo Puffers are recommended for experienced fishkeepers. They require a meaty diet, good water quality and careful consideration when designing their aquarium.

They should not be considered a community fish and are normally best maintained as a solitary specimen.

Pufferfish should never be deliberately inflated or handled unnecessarily. If they become stressed, they may inflate naturally, but repeated intentional inflation can cause unnecessary stress.

A Congo Puffer makes an exceptional feature fish for an appropriately set-up aquarium and can develop a surprisingly strong personality once settled in.
