The Dwarf Marbled Catfish (Microglanis poecilus) is a small, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish from South America (Essequibo/Suriname rivers), reaching only 2-3 inches (7-8 cm). It features a distinct bumblebee-like marbled brown/white pattern, a wide head, and short barbels. It is a peaceful, shy nocturnal scavenger, often inhabiting leaf litter.
Key Characteristics and Care:
Appearance: Small, robust body with dark brown markings on a lighter, sometimes yellowish-white background, creating a checkered or marbled appearance. The caudal fin has a dark, triangular band.
Behavior: Peaceful, slow-moving nocturnal, but can be territorial towards its own kind. They are excellent for nano-tanks but often hide during the day.
Tank Requirements: Requires a small aquarium (approx. 15-20 gallons) with plenty of hiding spots, such as bogwood, leaves, and soft sand substrate to protect their delicate barbels.
Water Conditions: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.5), a temperature of, and high oxygen levels.
Diet: Omnivorous. They eat small invertebrates, larvae, and most sinking, high-quality fish food.
Sexing: Well-conditioned females are generally plumper and wider in the abdomen than males.
These fish are part of the Pseudopimelodidae family and are often confused with other "bumblebee" catfish. They are considered excellent, non-aggressive additions to community tanks provided they are not outcompeted for food by faster fish.
