Echinodorus argentinensis (Echinodorus argentinensis)

Echinodorus argentinensis, commonly known as the Argentine Sword Plant, is a magnificent background aquarium plant renowned for its long, broad, vibrant green leaves and impressive size. This hardy species creates a lush, natural focal point in larger aquariums, with elegant arching foliage that provides excellent shelter for fish while adding height and depth to planted aquascapes.

Its robust nature and ease of care make it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. As one of the larger Sword Plants, Echinodorus argentinensis is perfect for creating an authentic South American biotope or adding a bold statement to a tropical community aquarium.

๐Ÿ“ Maximum Height: 40โ€“60cm (occasionally larger)
๐Ÿ“ Growth Rate: Moderate

Echinodorus argentinensis grows best in a nutrient-rich substrate, as it is a heavy root feeder. Supplementing with root tabs will encourage vigorous growth and healthy, vibrant leaves. While COโ‚‚ injection is not essential, it can enhance growth and overall plant health.

Provide enough space for the plant to spread, as mature specimens develop large rosettes that can become an impressive centrepiece in spacious aquariums.

๐ŸŸ Angelfish
๐ŸŸ Discus

Important Notes

As a large Sword Plant, Echinodorus argentinensis requires adequate space and is best suited to medium and large aquariums. In smaller tanks, it can quickly dominate the aquascape.

Being a heavy root feeder, regular supplementation with root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate will produce stronger growth and larger, healthier leaves. Older leaves should be removed periodically to encourage fresh new growth from the centre of the plant.

When first introduced to a new aquarium, the plant may shed a few emersed-grown leaves before producing new submerged foliage. This is a completely normal part of the acclimatisation process.

Echinodorus argentinensis is a superb choice for UK aquarists looking for a large, elegant, and easy-to-grow background plant. Its sweeping green foliage, impressive size, and hardy nature make it a stunning centrepiece for tropical community aquariums, South American biotopes, and heavily planted aquascapes alike.
