Endler's Livebearer (Poecilia wingei)

The Endler's Livebearer is a tiny, colourful and incredibly active freshwater fish that has become a favourite for planted aquariums and smaller community tanks. Males are particularly impressive, displaying brilliant combinations of orange, red, yellow, metallic blue-green and black across their bodies.

They are peaceful, hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

📏 Size & Appearance

Endler's Livebearers are much smaller than many commonly kept livebearers.

Males: approximately 2–2.5 cm
Females: approximately 3–4.5 cm

Males are the stars of the species, with vibrant colour patterns that can include orange, red, yellow, metallic green, blue and black. Individual patterns can vary considerably between strains. Females are larger and generally much less colourful, usually displaying a silvery or greyish appearance.

• Aquarium: Around 30–40 litres or larger for a small group.
• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: Approximately 7.0–8.5
• Water hardness: Moderate to hard water is preferred.
• Filtration: Good biological filtration with gentle to moderate flow.
• Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable.
• Aquascape: Live plants, especially fine-leaved plants and floating plants, are highly beneficial.

Endlers generally do best in stable, harder and slightly alkaline water, making them particularly well suited to many UK aquariums where tap water is naturally hard.

🍽️ Diet

Endler's Livebearers are omnivores and are very easy to feed.

A varied diet can include:

• 🐟 Small micro pellets
• 🦐 Baby brine shrimp
• 🪱 Bloodworm
• 🦐 Daphnia
• 🌿 Spirulina and other vegetable-based foods

Because of their tiny mouths, food should be appropriately sized. Feeding small amounts several times a day can work particularly well, especially when keeping juveniles or breeding colonies.

🐣 Breeding

Endler's Livebearers are livebearers, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.

They are prolific breeders and, under suitable conditions, a mixed-sex group can quickly produce a sizeable colony. Dense plants such as Java Moss and other fine-leaved plants provide excellent cover for young fry.

For a mixed-sex group, keeping approximately 1 male to 2–3 females helps reduce the amount of attention placed on individual females. Alternatively, an all-male group can be kept if breeding is not wanted.

🐟 Tank Mates

Endler's Livebearers are peaceful community fish and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive species.

Suitable companions can include:

• Neon and other small peaceful tetras
• Small rasboras
• Corydoras
• Otocinclus
• Peaceful shrimp
• Small snails
• Other appropriately sized peaceful livebearers

Avoid large, aggressive or fin-nipping fish that may view Endlers as prey. Their small size makes careful tank-mate selection particularly important.

🌿 Aquarium Setup

A well-planted aquarium is ideal. Endlers are constantly active, exploring the aquarium and weaving through plants.

Adding driftwood, rocks and dense planting can create a natural environment while giving females and fry somewhere to retreat.

They don't require a complicated aquascape, however, and their small size means they can make an excellent feature in a nano or smaller planted aquarium.

⚠️ Endlers & Guppies

One important consideration is that Endler's Livebearers can readily hybridise with common guppies (Poecilia reticulata). If maintaining a pure Endler line is important, they should not be housed with guppies.

Endler's Livebearers are one of the easiest colourful livebearers to keep, but their ability to reproduce rapidly should be considered before adding mixed-sex groups to a small aquarium.
