Equisetum hyemale (Rough Horsetail or Scouring Rush) is a primitive, evergreen, rhizomatous, and colony-forming perennial. It is characterized by stiff, unbranched, dark green, hollow stems, roughly 3–6 mm thick, featuring distinct horizontal black-banded sheaths at the joints. Reaching heights of 30–100 cm, these architectural, vertical plants are ideal for moist, sunny, or partially shaded, areas but are highly invasive, requiring containment.
Key Characteristics and Features:
Appearance: Distinctive, vertical, bamboo-like or pipe-like, jointed stems that rarely branch.
Texture: Rough to the touch due to silica deposits in the stems.
Leaves/Sheaths: Tiny, toothless leaves form ash-white, black-banded sheaths at each node.
Reproduction: Reproduces via spores, forming cone-like structures, rather than seeds or flowers.
Habit: Spreading, erect, and, in some climates, deciduous, but, commonly, evergreen.
Habitat: Thrives in, moist, soil, stream, banks, and, shallow, water.
Uses: Historically used for scrubbing, pots, and, now, popular, in, modern, water-side, landscapes.
Control: Spreads vigorously via, deep, underground, rhizomes, requiring, containment, like, planters, or, root, barriers.
Maintenance Tips:
Growth: Very, vigorous, to, invasive.
Light: Full, sun, to, part, shade.
Soil: Consistently, moist, to, wet.
Pruning: Cut back, old, canes, in, spring
