False Blochi Corydoras (Corydoras sp.)

The False Blochi Corydoras is a charming and active bottom-dwelling catfish that brings plenty of personality and movement to the freshwater aquarium. Often confused with the true Corydoras blochi, this attractive Corydoras features a silvery body with darker markings and the characteristic barbels and armoured plates found throughout the Corydoras genus.

Like other Corydoras, the False Blochi is a peaceful shoaling species that spends much of its time exploring the substrate, searching for tiny food particles. Its playful behaviour and habit of constantly investigating the aquarium floor make it a favourite among community aquarium keepers.

These Corydoras are particularly well suited to planted community aquariums, where groups can be seen interacting, resting together, and enthusiastically sifting through the substrate.

🏡 Aquarium Setup

False Blochi Corydoras thrive in mature freshwater aquariums with plenty of floor space to explore.

An ideal setup should include:

Fine sand is strongly recommended. Corydoras naturally investigate the substrate with their sensitive barbels, and sharp gravel can damage their mouths and barbels.

Dense planting provides shelter and helps create a more natural environment, while open areas of sand give the group plenty of space to forage.

🍽️ Feeding & Behaviour

False Blochi Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders, but they should not be expected to survive purely on leftover food.

Provide dedicated sinking foods such as:

Their characteristic foraging behaviour is fascinating to watch. They use their barbels to investigate the substrate and frequently dart towards the surface before returning to the bottom.

⚠️ Important Notes

Corydoras are highly social fish and should not be kept singly. A group of at least six allows them to display much more natural and confident behaviour.

They possess sharp defensive spines in their dorsal and pectoral fins. Care should therefore be taken when catching or transporting them, as these spines can become caught in aquarium nets.

Good oxygenation is particularly important. Corydoras will occasionally dash to the surface to gulp atmospheric air, which is a normal behaviour, but frequent or continuous surface-gulping can indicate poor oxygen levels or unsuitable water conditions.

Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes, as Corydoras can be sensitive to accumulated pollutants despite their generally hardy nature.
