The freshwater moray eel (Gymnothorax polyuranodon), often called the freshwater tiger or leopard moray, is a, elongated, predatory, snake-like fish reaching up to 1.5 meters (5 ft), though usually smaller. Known for its yellow/tan body covered in dark brown spots and blotches, it thrives in hard, alkaline, tropical, and preferably brackish, freshwater.

Key Characteristics and Facts:
Appearance: They have a distinctive, leopard-like spotted pattern with very small teeth relative to their head size.
Behavior: They are nocturnal, carnivorous predators that spend the day hiding in rocky crevices or mangroves. They are highly sedentary and rarely move far from their hideout.
Size: They can reach up to 1.5 meters, but in home aquariums, they are generally found to be less than 1 meter in length.
Habitat Requirements: They need a large, specialized aquarium with a very secure lid, as they are notorious escape artists. They prefer a pH of 7.5-8.5 and can tolerate, and often prefer, some salt in their water.
Feeding: As carnivores, they eat fish, shrimp, and worms. They often prefer live food, making them difficult to acclimate to a new tank, but can be trained to eat frozen food like krill or prawns.
Safety/Handling: They can be aggressive, and a bite can be painful. Their saliva is mildly toxic.
Vision/Smell: Like most morays, they have poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell to catch prey.

These eels are often confused with the Indian mud moray (Gymnothorax tile), but G. polyuranodon is more typically found in pure fresh water, whereas others often require brackish conditions.
