🔥 Gold Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus var.)
Often referred to as the "Golden Gourami," the Gold Gourami is a beautiful colour variety of the popular Three-Spot Gourami, admired for its vibrant golden-yellow body, elegant flowing fins, and peaceful yet curious personality. Their shimmering metallic colouration makes them a stunning centrepiece fish for medium to large tropical aquariums, especially when kept in a well-planted setup.
Intelligent, hardy, and full of character, Gold Gouramis are known for their unique "feeler" fins, which they use to explore their surroundings and interact with objects, plants, and even their owners. Their calm swimming style and attractive appearance make them a favourite among freshwater aquarists.
🌿 Why Choose Gold Gourami?
✨ Stunning golden-yellow colouration that brightens any aquarium
🧠 Intelligent fish with curious, interactive behaviour
🌱 Excellent choice for planted tropical aquariums
💪 Hardy and adaptable compared to many other gourami species
🐠 Peaceful community fish with a graceful swimming style
🌬️ Labyrinth fish capable of breathing atmospheric air
Gold Gouramis naturally inhabit slow-moving rivers, ponds, swamps, and heavily vegetated waters across Southeast Asia. In the aquarium, they appreciate calm water, plenty of cover, and areas where they can explore at their own pace. Their gentle movements and bright colours make them a beautiful addition to a natural aquascape.

Gold Gouramis thrive in mature aquariums with stable water conditions, gentle filtration, and plenty of plants. They enjoy floating plants such as Amazon Frogbit and Salvinia, which provide shade and encourage natural behaviour. They also appreciate broad-leaved plants, driftwood, and open swimming areas.
🐠 Compatibility
Gold Gouramis are suitable for peaceful community aquariums when kept with appropriate tank mates. Good companions include larger peaceful tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, peaceful barbs, rainbowfish, bristlenose plecos, kuhli loaches, and other similarly sized community fish.
Avoid keeping them with aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species, or very small fish that may become intimidated by their size. Male Gold Gouramis can become territorial, particularly in smaller aquariums or when multiple males are kept together.
Important Notes
Gold Gouramis are generally hardy and beginner-friendly, making them an excellent choice for aquarists wanting a colourful feature fish without the demanding care requirements of some more sensitive species. However, they still benefit greatly from a peaceful environment and should not be kept in overly active or aggressive communities.
Like other labyrinth fish, Gold Gouramis can breathe air from the surface using their labyrinth organ. This means they should always have access to the water surface and should not be kept in aquariums with excessive surface agitation.
A varied diet, clean water, and a planted environment will help maintain their vibrant golden colouration and encourage natural behaviours. Males often develop more pointed dorsal fins and may display stronger territorial behaviour than females.
The Gold Gourami is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a colourful, intelligent, and hardy tropical fish. With its glowing golden appearance, peaceful personality, and fascinating behaviour, it makes an impressive centrepiece for a large planted freshwater aquarium.
