Often referred to as the "Golden Wagtail Platy," this beautiful livebearer is a popular freshwater fish admired for its vibrant golden-yellow body, striking black markings, and peaceful personality. Combining bright colouration with an easy-going nature, the Gold Wagtail Platy is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for a hardy, active, and attractive community fish.

With their warm golden tones, contrasting dark fins, and lively swimming style, these platys bring colour and movement to any aquarium. Their friendly nature and adaptability have made them one of the most beloved livebearing fish in the hobby.

🌿 Why Choose Gold Wagtail Platys?
🌟 Stunning golden-yellow body with bold black markings
🐟 Peaceful and highly suitable for community aquariums
💪 Extremely hardy and beginner-friendly
🌱 Excellent choice for planted freshwater setups
👶 Easy to breed and fascinating to observe
✨ Active, colourful fish that add constant movement

Gold Wagtail Platys are selectively bred varieties of the Southern Platyfish, which naturally inhabit slow-moving streams, canals, ponds, and heavily vegetated waters throughout Central America. Their wild ancestors live among aquatic plants and shallow waters, where they graze on algae and search for small food sources.

📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Xiphophorus maculatus
📛 Common Name: Gold Wagtail Platy / Golden Wagtail Platy
🏠 Tank Size: 60L+ recommended
📏 Adult Size: 5–7cm
🌡️ Temperature: 20–26°C
⚗️ pH Range: 7.0–8.2
🧘 Temperament: Peaceful
🍽️ Diet: High-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, spirulina-based foods, algae wafers, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and blanched vegetables
👥 Group Size: 5+ recommended (with more females than males)

Gold Wagtail Platys thrive in mature aquariums with stable water conditions, gentle filtration, and plenty of swimming space. They appreciate planted aquariums with hardy plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, Vallisneria, and floating plants that provide shelter and encourage natural behaviour.

They are adaptable fish but prefer harder, slightly alkaline water. Adding plants and maintaining good water quality will help enhance their colouration and overall health.

🐠 Compatibility

Gold Wagtail Platys are peaceful community fish and mix well with many other freshwater species. Suitable tank mates include:

🐟 Guppies
🐟 Mollies
🐟 Swordtails
🐟 Corydoras
🐟 Small peaceful tetras
🐟 Rasboras
🐟 Danios
🐟 Freshwater shrimp (adult shrimp are generally safer)

Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species, and large predatory fish that may harass or consume them. Males can occasionally display mild chasing behaviour, so keeping a ratio of one male to two or three females helps reduce stress.

Important Notes

Gold Wagtail Platys are livebearers, meaning females give birth to fully formed free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. They are prolific breeders and can quickly increase in numbers when kept in suitable conditions.

A balanced diet containing both plant-based and protein-rich foods is important for maintaining their bright golden colouration. Spirulina and vegetable matter help support digestion, while frozen foods encourage healthy growth and natural feeding behaviour.

Their hardy nature makes them an excellent choice for beginners, but they are still happiest in a well-maintained aquarium with regular water changes and a stable environment.

The Gold Wagtail Platy is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a colourful, peaceful, and easy-care freshwater fish. With its glowing golden appearance, friendly temperament, and lively personality, it makes a wonderful addition to community aquariums, planted tanks, and family-friendly setups.
