The Golden Orfe (Leuciscus idus) is a striking, highly active freshwater fish and a popular choice for large ornamental ponds. Originally a golden variety of the European Ide, it is prized for its shimmering orange-gold hue and its tendency to swim near the surface in social shoals.

Physical Appearance
Colouration: Typically has a pale orange to vibrant yellow-gold base. You may see occasional black spots or "flecks" on their backs, particularly near the head.
Body Shape: They possess a slender, streamlined, and aerodynamic body built for speed.
Size: In typical pond conditions, they usually reach 30–40 cm (approx. 12–16 inches), though they can grow up to 60 cm (24 inches) in ideal environments.
Fins & Eyes: They feature a deeply forked tail fin and large eyes. Their pectoral and anal fins often have a reddish or orange tint.

Key Characteristics & Behaviour
Active Surface Dwellers: Unlike many other pond fish, Orfe spend most of their time near the water's surface, making them very easy to view from above.
Shoaling Nature: They are highly social and thrive best in groups (shoals) of six or more; individuals kept alone are often shy and may not live long.
"Jumping" Fish: They are known for leaping out of the water to catch low-flying insects like mosquitoes.
Plant-Friendly: Unlike Koi, Golden Orfe do not dig up or eat pond plants, making them ideal for heavily planted garden ponds.
Predatory Habits: They are omnivorous but have a predatory side; while they primarily eat insects and larvae, large adults may eat small fish or fry.
