Golden Peacock Bass (Cichla kelberi)
The Golden Peacock Bass is a spectacular and highly sought-after predatory cichlid admired for its vibrant golden-yellow body, bold black markings, and impressive personality. A true showpiece fish, this species combines the intelligence and character of large cichlids with a stunning appearance that makes it one of the most desirable South American predators in the aquarium hobby.
Unlike many large predatory fish, the Golden Peacock Bass is known for being highly interactive with its keeper. Many individuals learn feeding routines, recognise their owner, and display fascinating hunting behaviours. Their powerful swimming style, confident nature, and striking colours make them a captivating centrepiece for a large aquarium.
Native to the Amazon basin of Brazil, particularly clear-water rivers and tributaries, Golden Peacock Bass inhabit warm, slow-moving waters with submerged branches, roots, and vegetation. They are ambush predators in the wild, using their excellent eyesight and explosive speed to hunt smaller fish.
Although they are one of the smaller members of the Peacock Bass group, they are still a large and demanding species requiring a spacious aquarium and experienced care.

📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Cichla kelberi
📛 Common Name: Golden Peacock Bass, Kelberi Peacock Bass
🏠 Tank Size: Minimum 500L+ recommended for an adult; much larger for groups
📏 Adult Size: Approximately 45–60cm
🌡️ Temperature: 24–30°C
⚗️ pH Range: 6.0–7.5
💧 Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–15 dGH)
🧘 Temperament: Predatory and semi-aggressive
🍽️ Diet: Quality carnivore pellets, prawns, mussels, fish fillets, earthworms, and other meaty foods
👥 Group Size: Can be kept singly or in groups in very large aquariums
🏡 Aquarium Setup
Golden Peacock Bass require a large aquarium with excellent filtration and plenty of swimming space. They are powerful fish that produce a significant amount of waste, so maintaining excellent water quality is essential.
A suitable setup should include:
🪵 Large driftwood pieces
🪨 Smooth rocks
🌿 Robust plants attached to décor
🌊 Open swimming areas
💧 Strong biological filtration
Unlike smaller aquarium fish, Golden Peacock Bass do not require densely planted aquariums. They benefit more from open space and secure hiding areas that mimic their natural river environment.
A secure aquarium lid is essential, as large cichlids are powerful jumpers and can launch themselves from the water when startled or during feeding.
Because of their size and feeding habits, regular maintenance and large water changes are required to keep them healthy.
🐠 Compatibility
Golden Peacock Bass are predators and must only be housed with appropriately sized tank mates.
Suitable companions may include:
✅ Large peaceful South American cichlids
✅ Large catfish
✅ Silver Dollars
✅ Large plecos
✅ Other Peacock Bass (in suitably sized aquariums)
Avoid keeping them with:
❌ Small fish that can fit in their mouth
❌ Shrimp or small invertebrates
❌ Aggressive territorial species
❌ Fish that require cooler water
❌ Slow-moving fish that cannot compete at feeding time
Even peaceful individuals remain predators by nature, and any fish small enough to swallow may eventually become food.
🍽️ Feeding & Behaviour
Golden Peacock Bass are active predators with excellent eyesight and a powerful feeding response.
A healthy diet should include:
🦐 Prawns and shrimp
🐚 Mussels
🐟 High-quality carnivore pellets
🪱 Earthworms
🦑 Seafood-based frozen foods
Avoid feeding live feeder fish regularly, as this can introduce parasites and does not provide the balanced nutrition required for long-term health.
Young Golden Peacock Bass grow quickly and require frequent feeding, while adults should be fed a controlled diet to prevent obesity.
Their intelligence is one of their most appealing traits. Many specimens become very interactive, following movement outside the aquarium and eagerly approaching their keeper.
⚠️ Important Notes
Golden Peacock Bass are a long-term commitment and should only be purchased by aquarists prepared for their adult size. A small juvenile may appear suitable for a modest aquarium, but they grow into large, powerful fish requiring substantial space.
They are one of the more manageable Peacock Bass species, but they still require excellent filtration, regular maintenance, and a carefully planned aquarium setup.
Colour development improves significantly as they mature, with adults displaying intense golden tones, darker markings, and impressive body shape.
When properly cared for, Golden Peacock Bass can live for 10–15 years or more, becoming a true aquatic companion with a strong personality.
