Ramshorn Snail (Planorbidae family)

Often overlooked as simple aquarium cleaners, Ramshorn Snails are actually one of the most attractive and useful freshwater snails available. Their distinctive spiral-shaped shells, gentle grazing behaviour, and wide variety of colours make them a fantastic addition to planted aquariums. Available in stunning shades such as red, blue, pink, brown, leopard, and even chocolate, Ramshorn Snails can add a unique decorative element while helping to maintain a cleaner aquarium environment.

Peaceful, hardy, and fascinating to watch, Ramshorn Snails slowly glide across glass, plants, rocks, and driftwood while searching for algae and leftover food. Their spiral shells and calm movements make them especially popular in aquascaped aquariums where they blend beautifully into natural layouts.

Ramshorn Snails are peaceful scavengers that spend their time grazing on algae, biofilm, decaying plant matter, and uneaten food. Unlike many other snails, they are active during both the day and night, making them an interesting addition to any aquarium.

📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Planorbidae family (commonly Planorbarius spp. and related species)
📛 Common Name: Ramshorn Snail
🏠 Tank Size: 10L+ recommended
📏 Adult Size: 1.5–3cm (depending on species)
🌡️ Temperature: 18–28°C
⚗️ pH Range: 6.5–8.0
🧘 Temperament: Peaceful
🍽️ Diet: Algae, biofilm, sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach, cucumber), decaying plant matter, and leftover fish food
👥 Group Size: Can be kept individually or in groups

Ramshorn Snails thrive in mature aquariums with stable water conditions and plenty of natural surfaces to graze on. They particularly enjoy planted tanks with driftwood, rocks, and broad-leaved plants where biofilm naturally develops. They are excellent inhabitants for low-maintenance aquariums and natural aquascapes.

🐠 Compatibility

Ideal for peaceful community aquariums. Suitable tank mates include small tropical fish, livebearers, tetras, rasboras, gouramis, Corydoras, shrimp, and other peaceful aquatic species.

Avoid keeping them with snail-eating or predatory fish such as puffers, loaches, large cichlids, and aggressive species that may view them as food. Some fish may also pick at smaller snails, so compatibility should always be considered.

Important Notes

Ramshorn Snails are often misunderstood because their population can increase rapidly when there is an excess of food available. A sudden increase in numbers is usually a sign of overfeeding rather than a problem caused by the snails themselves. Maintaining controlled feeding and removing excess waste will naturally regulate their population.

They are valuable members of an aquarium ecosystem, helping to break down organic waste and recycle nutrients. Their presence can improve the balance of a planted aquarium by cleaning surfaces and consuming decaying material before it contributes to water quality issues.

The Ramshorn Snail is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a peaceful, colourful, and beneficial freshwater invertebrate. Whether added to a shrimp tank, planted aquascape, or community aquarium, these charming snails bring beauty, activity, and natural cleaning benefits to any freshwater setup.
