Key Characteristics & Details
Foliage: Intense variegation (red, pink, yellow, cream, green) that intensifies in full sun. Leaves release a citrus/orange scent when crushed.
Flowers: Small yellow-green spikes surrounded by four white, petal-like bracts, blooming from May to September.
Growth Habit: Low-growing, spreading via rhizomes, making it excellent for groundcover, pond margins, or, in some cases, an aggressive, invasive plant.
Height/Spread: Reaches 20–30 cm in height, with a rapid spread up to 100 cm.
Conditions: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, and in moisture-retentive, boggy, or even shallow water.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK, but herbaceous (dies back to the ground in winter).
Maintenance Tips
Invasiveness: Highly vigorous; recommended to plant in containers or with barriers to prevent it from spreading throughout the garden.
Sunlight: Brighter, more colorful, and warmer colors are produced in full sun.
Usage: Suitable for bog gardens, water features, containers, and, to a lesser extent, moist borders.
