Magnificent Sea Anemone

Scientific Name: Heteractis magnifica
Common Names: Magnificent Anemone, Ritteri Anemone
Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Expert
Type: Marine invertebrate / host anemone

The Magnificent Sea Anemone is one of the most impressive host anemones available to marine aquarists. It develops long, flowing tentacles and can display spectacular colours including green, purple, red, orange, blue and tan. It is a natural host for several species of clownfish, but it is considered an expert-level species because it requires excellent water quality, strong lighting and substantial water movement.

Size & Appearance

  • Can reach 30–45 cm or more across in aquariums.
  • Wild specimens can become considerably larger.
  • Long, flowing tentacles surround a prominent central oral disc.
  • Available in a wide range of colours.
  • Usually attaches firmly to rockwork in a position with strong light and flow.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Large, mature marine aquarium recommended.
  • Excellent water quality and stable parameters are essential.
  • Plenty of porous live rock should be available for attachment.
  • Provide open space around the anemone as it can expand considerably.
  • A secure lid is strongly recommended because anemones can move around the aquarium.

Lighting

Very high lighting is required.
Powerful reef-quality LED or equivalent lighting is essential because H. magnifica relies heavily on its symbiotic photosynthetic algae for energy. It should generally be positioned relatively high where it can receive intense light.

Water Flow

Strong, turbulent flow is preferred. Avoid directing a powerful, narrow jet directly at the animal. Good circulation helps keep the anemone healthy and allows its tentacles to move naturally.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–26°C
  • Specific Gravity: 1.023–1.025
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • dKH: 8–12
  • Ammonia: 0
  • Nitrite: 0
  • Keep nitrate and phosphate controlled and avoid sudden changes.

Feeding

Although it obtains a significant amount of energy from its symbiotic algae, supplementary feeding can be beneficial.

Offer small amounts of:

  • Mysis shrimp
  • Chopped marine seafood
  • Krill
  • Other suitable meaty marine foods

Feed sparingly rather than giving large meals, particularly in a newer aquarium.

Clownfish

The Magnificent Anemone is a natural host for a number of clownfish species. Some clownfish may readily accept it, while captive-bred clownfish may take longer or may not host it at all. The presence of clownfish is not necessary for the anemone's survival.

Compatibility

⚠️ Use caution with tank mates.

The anemone has powerful stinging cells and can injure nearby corals. It can also move around the aquarium, potentially coming into contact with corals or equipment.

Protect all pumps and overflows with suitable guards to prevent the anemone being sucked into equipment.

Health

A healthy Magnificent Anemone should:

  • Remain firmly attached.
  • Have a full, expanded appearance.
  • Have sticky, responsive tentacles.
  • Maintain good colouration.
  • Respond appropriately to food and changes in its surroundings.

Shrinking, persistent deflation, damaged tissue, gaping mouth or loss of colour can indicate serious stress. This species is particularly susceptible to bacterial problems, making excellent water quality and careful acclimation extremely important.

Important Note

This is not a beginner's anemone. Heteractis magnifica is considerably more demanding than commonly recommended beginner species such as the Bubble Tip Anemone. It should only be introduced into a well-established, stable reef aquarium with powerful lighting, strong circulation and excellent water quality.

If you're using this for a shop information sheet, I'd rate it EXPERT ONLY and make the lighting, mature aquarium and water-quality requirements particularly prominent.
