Mbu Puffers are native to parts of the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, where they inhabit freshwater rivers and areas with relatively slow-moving water. In the wild, they feed on hard-shelled prey such as snails and other aquatic invertebrates. Their powerful jaws and continuously growing teeth are specially adapted for crushing shells.

Mbu Puffers require excellent filtration and very good water quality. Because they are messy eaters and produce considerable waste, powerful biological and mechanical filtration is essential, alongside regular water changes.

Aquascaping should provide plenty of open swimming space while incorporating robust décor such as large pieces of driftwood, rocks and smooth ornaments. Avoid delicate plants and decorations that can easily be damaged by a large puffer.

Their aquarium should also have a secure lid, as puffers can be surprisingly powerful swimmers and may jump when startled.

🍽️ Feeding & Dental Care

One of the most important aspects of Mbu Puffer care is providing an appropriate diet.

Pufferfish teeth continually grow throughout their lives, so regular feeding of hard-shelled foods is essential to naturally wear them down. Suitable foods can include:

Mbu Puffers are generally best kept alone. Their powerful beaks and curious nature mean that tankmates can be injured or killed, even when the puffer does not appear particularly aggressive.

They should not be considered a conventional community fish and are unsuitable for aquariums containing small fish, shrimp or ornamental snails.

If another fish is introduced, there is always a significant risk of territorial behaviour, fin damage or predation. For this reason, a species-only aquarium is the safest and most reliable setup.

The Mbu Puffer is not a suitable fish for beginners. Its eventual size, specialist diet, powerful bite, waste production and substantial aquarium requirements make it a long-term commitment.

Young Mbu Puffers can sometimes be kept in considerably smaller aquariums temporarily, but their adult requirements should always be planned for before purchasing. A juvenile Mbu should not be bought with the intention of finding a larger aquarium later without having a realistic plan for its long-term care.
