Mimulus ringens (Allegheny monkey flower) is an erect, rhizomatous perennial native to North America, typically growing 1–3 ft. (30–90 cm) tall in wet, sunny, or partially shaded areas. It features square stems, narrow leaves, and snapdragon-like, two-lipped, pale blue-violet to white flowers that bloom from June to September.
Key Characteristics and Growth:
Flowers: Small (approx. 1 in. long), two-lipped, and tubular, resembling a, monkey's face, appearing from leaf axils.
Leaves: Lance-shaped, toothed, and mid-green, with a sessile (stalkless) attachment to the stem.
Habit: Erect and upright, spreading via rhizomes.
Habitat: Thrives in wet, boggy soil, marshes, or shallow water up to 6 in. (15 cm) deep.
Usage: Often used in rain gardens, pond margins, and for erosion control.
Cultivation and Care:
Light: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Consistently moist, fertile, and rich in humus.
Maintenance: Low maintenance, but deadheading (removing faded flowers) can encourage more blooms.
