🔥 Mixed Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii)

Add bold colour, personality, and constant movement to your aquarium with the vibrant Mixed Swordtail. Known for their distinctive elongated “sword” tail in males and a wide variety of colours—from reds and oranges to greens, blacks, and marbled patterns—these fish bring energy and variety to any setup.

Swordtails are hardy, active livebearers that are perfect for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

🌿 Why Choose Mixed Swordtail?

⚔️ Unique elongated “sword” tail (males)
🎨 Wide mix of bright colours and patterns
🐠 Active and lively community fish
🌱 Ideal for planted and larger aquariums
⭐ Popular, hardy livebearer in the UK

When kept in groups, Swordtails create a dynamic, colourful display, with males often showing off their tails and interacting with one another.

📏 Care Requirements

🧬 Scientific Name: Xiphophorus hellerii
📛 Common Name: Mixed Swordtail
🏠 Tank Size: 80L+ recommended
🌡️ Temperature: 22–28°C
⚗️ pH Range: 7.0–8.5
🧘 Temperament: Peaceful (males may compete)
🍽️ Diet: Flakes, pellets, vegetable matter, frozen & live foods
👥 Group Size: 4–6+ recommended (more females than males)

Swordtails thrive in well-maintained aquariums with good filtration, open swimming space, and some planted areas for cover.

🐠 Compatibility

Ideal for community aquariums. They mix well with other livebearers such as guppies, mollies, and platies, as well as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.

Important Notes

Swordtails are livebearers and breed readily in aquariums. Males may show dominance behaviour, so keeping more females than males helps reduce aggression. They prefer slightly harder, alkaline water conditions.

The Mixed Swordtail is a great choice for UK aquarists looking for a colourful, active, and easy-to-keep fish that adds movement and variety to community aquariums.
