Their reflective scales catch the light beautifully, making them a spectacular sight as they swim together in groups.

Highly active and social, Mono Fish are best kept in schools where they display natural shoaling behaviour and create a lively, eye-catching display. They are an excellent choice for experienced aquarists looking to establish a large brackish aquarium.

📏 Care Requirements
🧬 Scientific Name: Monodactylus argenteus
📛 Common Name: Mono Fish / Silver Moony
🏠 Tank Size: 300L+ recommended
📏 Adult Size: Up to 25cm
🌡️ Temperature: 24–28°C
⚗️ pH Range: 7.5–8.5
💧 Water Type: Brackish to marine (Specific Gravity approximately 1.005–1.020, increasing as they mature)
🧘 Temperament: Peaceful
🍽️ Diet: Flakes, pellets, algae-based foods, frozen foods, live foods, and vegetable matter
👥 Group Size: 5+ recommended

Mono Fish require spacious aquariums with excellent filtration, open swimming areas, and stable brackish water conditions. As they mature, they generally thrive in higher salinity and can even be successfully maintained in full marine aquariums.

🐠 Compatibility

Ideal for larger brackish aquariums with similarly sized species. They are excellent companions for scats, figure of eight puffers (in appropriate low-end brackish conditions while young), archerfish, knight gobies, and other peaceful brackish fish with similar environmental requirements. Avoid small fish that may become prey and aggressive species that may harass them.

Important Notes

Mono Fish are highly social and should never be kept alone, as solitary individuals often become stressed and less active. Although juveniles can adapt to lower-end brackish water, adults require progressively higher salinity for long-term health. A varied diet containing both vegetable matter and protein will help maintain their vibrant appearance and overall condition.

The Mono Fish is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a large, active, and eye-catching brackish species that combines shimmering silver beauty with peaceful schooling behaviour, making it a spectacular addition to any specialist aquarium.
