🐟 Red-Bellied Piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri)
The Red-Bellied Piranha is one of the most recognisable freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby, known for its powerful body, silvery scales and distinctive red-orange colouring across the lower jaw and belly. Native to South American river systems, this fascinating species is an active, robust fish best suited to experienced aquarists with the space and knowledge to meet its needs.
Although often portrayed as an aggressive predator, its behaviour is more complex than its reputation suggests. Red-Bellied Piranhas are social fish that may shoal together, but they can also become territorial, particularly when stressed, overcrowded or competing for food. They require careful management and should not be treated as ordinary community fish.
🌿 Why Choose a Red-Bellied Piranha?
-
🔴 Distinctive colouring: Silvery scales contrast with the red-orange belly.
-
🐟 Fascinating behaviour: Displays interesting social and feeding behaviours.
-
🌎 Iconic species: A well-known fish from South American freshwater habitats.
-
👀 Impressive display fish: Their movements and interactions make them engaging to observe.
-
💪 Robust build: A powerful-bodied species that can thrive with consistent care.
🌍 Natural Habitat
Red-Bellied Piranhas occur throughout much of South America, inhabiting river channels, tributaries, floodplains and seasonally flooded areas. Their natural environments vary in flow, vegetation and water chemistry, with submerged roots and sheltered areas providing cover.
In captivity, a spacious aquarium with shaded retreats, driftwood and robust plants or artificial cover can help reduce stress. Open swimming areas are also important, particularly when keeping a group.
📏 Care Requirements
-
Scientific Name: Pygocentrus nattereri
-
Common Name: Red-Bellied Piranha
-
Minimum Tank Size: 400 litres or more for a group, with substantially larger aquariums recommended as they grow.
-
Adult Size: Usually 25–33 cm.
-
Temperature: 24–28°C
-
pH: 6.0–7.5
-
Temperament: Potentially territorial and unpredictable, particularly during feeding and breeding.
-
Diet: Carnivorous and opportunistic; offer a varied diet of suitable frozen foods, prawns, fish-based foods and formulated carnivore diets.
-
Group Size: Commonly kept in groups, but social compatibility is not guaranteed. Provide ample space and monitor aggression carefully.
A large, robustly equipped aquarium is essential, with powerful filtration, good oxygenation and plenty of open swimming space. Use driftwood and sturdy decorations to provide shelter, while avoiding sharp objects that could cause injuries. A secure lid is recommended.
🐠 Compatibility
Red-Bellied Piranhas are best kept in a carefully planned species aquarium. Keeping them with other fish carries a significant risk of injury or predation, even when tank mates initially appear compatible.
Important considerations:
-
Other piranhas may fight or injure one another, especially when overcrowded or competing for food.
-
Small fish and invertebrates are likely to be eaten.
-
Large tank mates are not automatically safe; aggression and fin damage can occur.
-
Avoid treating them as suitable community fish.
⚠️ Important Notes
-
Experienced keepers only: Their size, feeding behaviour and potential aggression require careful management.
-
Feeding: Avoid using wild-caught feeder fish, which can introduce parasites and disease.
-
Water quality: Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and maintain regular water changes.
-
Safety: Their teeth are sharp. Never put your hands into the aquarium with the fish present; use suitable equipment for maintenance.
-
UK regulations: Piranhas belong to the Characiformes, an order covered by England's non-native fish controls. Before acquiring, importing or selling them, check whether the exact species and intended activity are covered by an ornamental-fish exemption or require a licence.
