Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis spp.)

Often referred to as the "Jewel of Africa," the Jewel Cichlid is one of the most brilliantly coloured freshwater fish available. Famous for its dazzling ruby-red body, shimmering turquoise-blue spots, and striking iridescent scales, this spectacular African cichlid lives up to its name and creates an unforgettable display in any suitably sized aquarium.

Bold, intelligent, and full of personality, Jewel Cichlids are highly interactive fish that quickly become the focal point of an aquarium. During breeding, their colours intensify dramatically, with both males and females displaying vibrant crimson hues and sparkling blue markings that are among the brightest found in freshwater fish.

๐ŸŒฟ Why Choose Jewel Cichlids?
๐Ÿ’Ž Stunning ruby-red body with iridescent blue spotting
๐ŸŒˆ One of the most colourful freshwater cichlids available
๐Ÿง  Intelligent fish with engaging personalities
๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿ‘ง Exceptional breeding and parental care behaviours
๐Ÿ† Fantastic centrepiece for African-themed aquariums
โœจ Vibrant colours become even more intense during breeding

Jewel Cichlids naturally inhabit rivers, streams, floodplains, and lakes across West and Central Africa. They are often found among rocks, submerged roots, and dense vegetation where they establish territories and search for insects, crustaceans, and other small prey.

๐Ÿ“ Care Requirements
๐Ÿงฌ Scientific Name: Hemichromis spp.
๐Ÿ“› Common Name: Jewel Cichlid / Red Jewel Cichlid
๐Ÿ  Tank Size: 120L+ recommended for a pair
๐Ÿ“ Adult Size: Up to 10โ€“15cm (depending on species)
๐ŸŒก๏ธ Temperature: 24โ€“28ยฐC
โš—๏ธ pH Range: 6.5โ€“7.8
๐Ÿง˜ Temperament: Semi-aggressive to aggressive, especially during breeding
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Diet: High-quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, insects, earthworms, and other protein-rich foods with occasional vegetable matter
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Group Size: Best kept as a bonded pair or singly unless housed in a very large aquarium

Jewel Cichlids thrive in mature aquariums with excellent filtration and stable water conditions. A natural setup with fine gravel or sand, smooth rocks, caves, driftwood, and robust plants provides ideal territories and shelter. They enjoy rearranging the substrate and may dig while establishing breeding sites.

๐Ÿ  Compatibility

Jewel Cichlids are best suited to robust community aquariums or African cichlid setups with similarly sized fish. Suitable tank mates include:

๐ŸŸ Congo Tetras
๐ŸŸ Larger Rainbowfish
๐ŸŸ Synodontis Catfish
๐ŸŸ Bristlenose Plecos
๐ŸŸ Larger Barbs
๐ŸŸ Other robust African cichlids of similar temperament (in appropriately sized aquariums)

Avoid keeping them with small community fish, shrimp, slow-moving species, or timid tank mates, as they may become aggressive or territorial. During spawning, pairs will vigorously defend their territory and can become highly protective of their eggs and fry.

Important Notes

Jewel Cichlids are best suited to aquarists with some experience of keeping territorial fish. While they are hardy and adaptable, their assertive nature means careful thought should be given to tank mates and aquarium layout.

One of their most fascinating characteristics is their exceptional parental care. Both parents actively guard, fan, and care for their eggs before leading their fry around the aquarium, protecting them from potential threats. This behaviour is among the most impressive displayed by freshwater cichlids.

Their vivid colouration is heavily influenced by water quality, diet, and mood. A varied, protein-rich diet combined with regular maintenance and stable water conditions will help maintain their spectacular colours throughout their lives.

The Jewel Cichlid is a fantastic choice for UK aquarists looking for a bold, colourful, and intelligent freshwater fish. With its dazzling ruby-red colouration, fascinating behaviour, and remarkable parental instincts, it makes a striking centrepiece for a well-planned tropical cichlid aquarium.
