Jewel Cichlids naturally inhabit rivers, streams, floodplains, and lakes across West and Central Africa. They are often found among rocks, submerged roots, and dense vegetation where they establish territories and search for insects, crustaceans, and other small prey.

Jewel Cichlids thrive in mature aquariums with excellent filtration and stable water conditions. A natural setup with fine gravel or sand, smooth rocks, caves, driftwood, and robust plants provides ideal territories and shelter. They enjoy rearranging the substrate and may dig while establishing breeding sites.

Jewel Cichlids are best suited to robust community aquariums or African cichlid setups with similarly sized fish. Suitable tank mates include:
