Scirpus cernuus (Fiber Optic Grass or Isolepis cernua) is a compact, mat-forming, semi-evergreen marginal plant (15–30 cm tall) known for its thin, grassy stems tipped with white, bead-like flowers resembling fiber optic lights. Ideal for pond margins, bog gardens, or containers, it thrives in shallow water (up to 10 cm deep) and moist soil.
Key Description and Characteristics:
Appearance: Features fine, hair-like, bright green, wiry foliage that forms dense, tufted clumps.
Flowers: Tiny, white, or silvery, bristle-like flower spikes appear at the tips of the foliage from July to September.
Growth Habit: Slow-growing, creeping, or clumping perennial.
Height/Spread: Typically reaches 15–30 cm in height with a spread of up to 50 cm.
Habitat: Thrives in full sun to partial shade in wet, marshy, or aquatic environments.
Uses: Excellent for pond edges, water features, and bog gardens, providing texture and acting as a mild oxygenator.
Hardiness: Generally hardy, but extreme, hard frosts may kill off some of the foliage.
Maintenance: Low maintenance, with pruning recommended in early spring to encourage new growth.
