Winter Trumpet Snail (Melanoides tuberculata)

The Winter Trumpet Snail is a hardy and highly beneficial freshwater snail, valued for its ability to help keep aquariums clean while naturally turning over the substrate. Recognisable by its elongated, cone-shaped shell with subtle shades of brown, cream, and olive, this peaceful snail spends much of the day burrowed beneath the substrate before emerging to forage, particularly during the evening.

Often referred to as the Malaysian Trumpet Snail, the Winter Trumpet Snail is an excellent addition to planted aquariums. As it burrows through the substrate, it helps prevent compacted areas, improves water circulation around plant roots, and consumes uneaten food and organic waste. Their constant activity makes them an invaluable member of any aquarium's clean-up crew.

๐ŸŒฟ Why Choose Winter Trumpet Snails?

๐ŸŒ Excellent natural clean-up crew
๐ŸŒฑ Aerates the substrate by burrowing through it
๐Ÿƒ Helps prevent waste build-up in the aquarium
๐Ÿงน Eats leftover food, algae, and decaying organic matter
๐ŸŒฟ Safe for planted aquariums and live plants
๐Ÿ’ช Extremely hardy and easy to care for
โœจ Ideal for tropical community aquariums

Winter Trumpet Snails are native to Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, where they inhabit rivers, lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams with soft sediments. Their adaptability has allowed them to become established in tropical and subtropical waters around the world.

๐Ÿ“ Care Requirements

๐Ÿงฌ Scientific Name: Melanoides tuberculata
๐Ÿ“› Common Name: Winter Trumpet Snail / Malaysian Trumpet Snail
๐Ÿ  Tank Size: 20L+ recommended
๐Ÿ“ Adult Size: Up to 3cm
๐ŸŒก๏ธ Temperature: 20โ€“30ยฐC
โš—๏ธ pH Range: 7.0โ€“8.2
๐Ÿง˜ Temperament: Peaceful

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Group Size: Can be kept singly or in groups

Winter Trumpet Snails thrive in mature aquariums with sand or fine gravel substrates that allow them to burrow naturally. They appreciate stable water conditions and benefit from moderate to hard water, which provides the calcium needed to maintain healthy shell growth. While they spend much of the day hidden beneath the substrate, they often become more active after lights out.

๐Ÿ  Compatibility

Winter Trumpet Snails are peaceful and suitable for most community aquariums, including:

๐ŸŸ Tetras
๐ŸŸ Rasboras
๐ŸŸ Guppies and Endlers
๐ŸŸ Corydoras
๐ŸŸ Plecos
๐ŸŸ Rainbowfish
๐Ÿฆ Freshwater Shrimp
๐ŸŒ Other peaceful freshwater snails

Avoid keeping them with snail-eating species such as Clown Loaches, Yo-Yo Loaches, many Pufferfish, or other predators that may consume them.

Important Notes

Winter Trumpet Snails reproduce through live birth, and populations can increase rapidly if excess food is available. A sudden increase in snail numbers is often an indication that the aquarium is being overfed rather than a problem with the snails themselves. Reducing feeding and regular maintenance will naturally help control their population.

Unlike many other aquarium snails, Winter Trumpet Snails spend much of their lives beneath the substrate, where they help oxygenate the gravel or sand and reduce the likelihood of anaerobic pockets developing. This makes them particularly beneficial in planted aquariums.

Healthy shell growth depends on adequate calcium and stable water chemistry. Soft, acidic water can gradually erode their shells, so maintaining suitable hardness is recommended.

The Winter Trumpet Snail is a fantastic addition for UK aquarists looking for a low-maintenance and highly effective clean-up crew member. Its ability to aerate the substrate, recycle organic waste, and contribute to a healthier aquarium ecosystem makes it one of the most useful freshwater snails for planted and community aquariums alike.
