The Clithon thorn zebra snail (Clithon corona or Clithon diadema), often called the Horned Nerite, is a small, peaceful, and popular freshwater aquarium snail known for its yellow-and-black striped shell and protective spikes. They are, at roughly 0.5–1 inch, exceptional, non-invasive algae eaters that cannot reproduce in freshwater, making them ideal for aquascapes.
Description & Appearance
Shell Pattern: They typically feature striking yellow and black, or brown and black, stripes/spires, though coloration can vary widely.
Horns/Spikes: They possess sharp, sometimes long, black, antler-like spikes, which serve as protection from fish.
Morphology: They are highly polymorphic, meaning no two snails look exactly alike.
Behavior & Aquarium Care.
Diet: Voracious algae eaters, primarily consuming diatoms and soft algae. They will not eat live plants.
Reproduction: Need brackish water to hatch; therefore, they will not overpopulate freshwater tanks.
Note: Known to be "escapists," they may occasionally climb above the water line.
These snails are frequently found in Southeast Asia in freshwater to brackish streams and rivers.
